Mass flow hazard modelling for Taranaki and Ruapehu volcanoes
Mass flows from volcanoes such as Taranaki/Egmont and Ruapehu are one of the most common and potentially most deadly volcanic hazards to the surrounding communities. These processes include: lahars (volcanic mud flows), pyroclastic flows (hot flows of gas and rock fragments), and debris avalanches (giant landslides). New developments in computing and understanding of the physical processes within these phenomena are beginning to enable computer simulation and numerical modelling of them. Several models using different physical theories and numerical models have been developed to an early stage, but real-world data is needed to be able to calibrate and test them. This project will aim to collect mass flow data from both Taranaki and Ruapehu to test the reliability of three to four different new models. In collaboration with two of the main groups (State University of New York at Buffalo, USGS) involved in these simulation efforts, the proposed research will identify the most important predictive data that can be collected from the field to constrain the models. Once the most reliable modelling approach is identified, the research will concentrate on applying simulations in a deterministic (scenario-based) or probabilistic fashion to develop a new understanding of the mass flow hazards at these two New Zealand volcanoes.
