MBIE success for Dr Jonathan Procter
28 February 2014
Dr Jonathan Procter has been awarded funding by New Zealand’s Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment for the project “Mātauranga Māori for the 21st Century”. Jonathan will work with two iwi, Rangitaane O Manawatu (Manawatu) and Ngāti Rangi (Central North Island), during the project, which is focused on exploring environmental mātauranga Māori. Both Rangitaane O Manawatu and Ngāti Rangi have active environmental units that respond to environmental management issues, but difficulties exist in being able to articulate mātauranga Māori and Māroi values within a local government / legislative framework or context. This project will investigate whether 21st century environmental sensors and Geographic Information Systems can be adapted and applied within an indigenous knowledge framework to build capability and create a more equitable resource management process.
