Volcanic Flow Generator in Action

April 2014

The volcanic flow generator built by Volcanic Risk Solutions researchers Dr Gert Lube and Professor Shane Cronin has featured in the news. The large-scale flow simulator was developed during a project funded by the Royal Society of New Zealand’s Marsden Fund to investigate the properties of deadly volcanic flows. The simulator allows researchers to recreate the conditions inside pyroclastic density currents and measure them with arrays of sensors and through high-speed video camera footage. The results are forming the basis of new models of how pyroclastic density currents behave, opening a path towards more reliable hazard forecasting.
