PhD Research

Title:

“Exploring geochemical cycles in response to the growth and destruction of stratovolcanoes”

Aims

New Zealand’s long-lived stratovolcanoes, Mt’s Taranaki and Ruapehu, exhibit the best long-term record of growth and destruction worldwide, making them ideal for hazard studies. This research attempts to solve one of the big problems of volcanic hazards by quantifying the relationship between magmatic rise and volcano growth and destruction.

Through this research we intend to use geochemical techniques, newly developed, to understand and predict the magmatic response to the release of pressure from catastrophic debris avalanches and develop the first long-term record of volcano evolution linking subsurface to sub-aerial processes.
